Škoda Auto is the largest car manufacturer in the Czech Republic. It is headquartered in Mladá Boleslav, where the largest production plant is located. It has two other production plants in the Czech Republic, in Kvasiny and Vrchlabí. Since 1991, it has been part of the German Volkswagen Group. It employs more than 30,000 people and produces 9 model lines of cars. In addition to the plants in the Czech Republic, production is complemented by plants in India, Russia and China.

Baseline and project objectives

The problem was heterogeneous data sources from many information systems, generating large volumes of difficult to structure data, as well as fragmented reports/analyses created by users in Excel without a broader context and with limited data visualization. Non-intuitive user interfaces discouraged effective use by end-users and the extensive diversification of technologies used, often without interdependent agendas.

Škoda Auto uses cockpits, or intuitive user interfaces, to clearly display important indicators of the company's daily life. Options for specific indicators, as well as their appearance and positioning, are easily adjustable. Of course, the display ranges from aggregated data to very detailed ("itemized") reporting.

Examples of implemented cockpits for different agendas include: 
  • Company KPIs, a cockpit designed for top management to present key company indicators from all areas (finance, controlling, production, sales, logistics, human resources, etc.).
  • Imports, a cockpit used by Volkswagen Group importers globally and at the same time for managing the sales network from the perspective of individual Group brands. 
  • Employees, a cockpit presenting personalised employee data (time and attendance, leave usage, etc.). It is designed for individual employees of the company, while also serving as a source of information for supervisors at all levels. 
  • Projects, a cockpit focused on global project management in terms of deadlines, budget, quality, resource utilization, etc. 
  • Monitoring of change requests and error messages, a cockpit for comprehensive management of information systems. Users are not only internal IT departments of the company, but also suppliers of specific information technologies.
